Futuri Remoti. Participation, design and scenarios in “european small and remote places”
Closing event of the European project Human Cities / SMOTIES
October 23, 2024, 2:45 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (an aperitivo will follow), Aula Magna, Building 1, Rectorate, Politecnico di Milano, Piazza Leonardo da Vinci 32, Milan
Polimi DESIS Lab — a research group of the Department of Design — presents the results of the European project Human Cities / SMOTIES as coordinator. The "Futuri Remoti" conference, the final event of the project, will bring together experts, academics and practitioners to discuss the challenges for design practice, public policy and scientific research.
Over the past two decades, design research has increasingly focused on social innovation and collaborative action for the common good, leading to the development of new forms of participatory design and active citizenship. One of the key challenges now is to understand and evaluate the social change generated by these experiences.
Human Cities / SMOTIES: Creative works with small and remote places is a research project co-funded by the European Union's Creative Europe program. From 2020 to 2024, it involved institutions, associations and citizens from ten small and remote European places to co-design innovative public spaces and services. The project developed diffuse and inclusive strategies capable of enhancing the specificity and cultural identity of these territories. These contexts proved ideal for the participatory design of future scenarios, supporting the creation of local stakeholder networks, the regeneration of public spaces and the promotion of historical and cultural heritage.
Moderator: Davide Fassi (Full Professor, Department of Design of Politecnico di Milano and coordinator of the Human Cities/SMOTIES project), Annalinda De Rosa (Researcher, Department of Design of Politecnico di Milano and co-coordinator of the Human Cities/SMOTIES project), Valentina Auricchio (Associate Professor, Department of Design of Politecnico di Milano and researcher of the Human Cities/SMOTIES project).
Speakers will include: Anna Conticello (Project Manager, Culture Office, Creative Europe Italy Desk), Elena Battaglini (Partner-Spatial Planner, Senior Consultant Felloni Lateral Office, and Scientific Director of the PNRR Green Communities CSR - Alta Sabina project), Daniele Busciantella Ricci (Researcher in Design, Department of Architecture, University of Florence), Aldo Buzio (Partner and Program Manager, Ideazione srl), Alessandro Coppola (Associate Professor, Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, Politecnico di Milano), Annibale D'Elia (Director of Urban Economy, Fashion and Design, City of Milan), Beatrice De Carli (Associate Professor, University of Sheffield), Maddalena Ferretti (Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering Building Architecture - DICEA, UNIVPM Università Politecnica delle Marche), Elena Giunta (Design director Studio Shift. Adjunct Lecturer, School of Design, Politecnico di Milano and Faculty of Design, Free University of Bolzano-Bozen).
