Method for implementing a QR code in knitted fabric

The new patent by a Department of Design's team of specialised technicians

A QR code in knitted fabric, readable by ordinary scanners: this is the invention of a Department of Design's team of specialised technicians, consisting of Giorgio Vignati, Fulvio Musante, Angelo Sabbioni, Laura Vicelli, Lucia Consiglia Tarantino.

The project introduces a novel approach to information transmission through the functional knitting of QR codes. This technology provides a sustainable alternative to traditional labels, which are often removed or overlooked, enabling the communication of essential data about the composition, maintenance, and traceability of a product.

Technical features
The invention is based on the knitted reproduction of QR codes that are readable by standard QR code scanners, integrating the information directly into the fabric of the product. Unlike traditional labels, often made of less sustainable materials such as nylon or polyester, this solution uses hypoallergenic and low-environmental-impact materials. The readability of the QR code is ensured even on jacquard structures, turning every product into a self-contained data carrier, 100% recyclable with the product to which it is applied, and resistant to time and wear.

Possible applications

  • Fashion Industry
  • Design Sector
  • General Apparel
  • Footwear Industry
  • Automotive Sector
  • Setups and new production processes

Advantages

  • Lifecycle coincides with that of the product: 100% recyclable
  • Resistant to fading over time
  • Both decorative and functional element
  • Enhances the product with multiple pieces of information
  • Traceability of the entire supply chain, from start to end-of-life of the product
