Monday, April 15, 2024, the “Complex Artefact and System Design Studio” of the MSc in Communication Design (School of Design, Politecnico di Milano) will host a new open lecture of the “DiGRA Italia Talks Series” on Interactive Transmedia Narrative and Game Studies, organised by Ilaria Mariani and Mariana Ciancia, Researchers at the Department of Design.
Lecturer:
Tanya X. Short. Co-founder and Lead Designer at Kitfox Games. Author of "Procedural Generation in Game Design" and "Designing Games for Ethical Play". Thanks to a rich background in game design and a passion for innovative storytelling, Short's expertise offers a fresh perspective on the art of game writing.
Topic:
Making the shift from linear narratives to complex, system-driven storytelling is essential for crafting immersive game experiences that captivate and engage. The talk will explore the transformative power of modular thinking in storytelling within the gaming world. Drawing upon examples from renowned games such as Dwarf Fortress and Moon Hunters, the intricacies of character writing and development will be analysed in-depth. The session will introduce the concept of Orthogonality in character traits, their expressions, and the art of prioritizing various types of character information, serving as a comprehensive metaphor for all aspects of system-driven writing.
