En-RRI. Enhancing responsible research and innovation in the co-creation of science and technology

The image depicts an abstract and dense network of digital or neural connections, composed of numerous blue circular nodes linked together by lines of the same hue against a white and light gray background. The structure develops irregularly, alternating wider, linear meshes in the foreground with central areas characterized by an extremely minute and complex pattern reminiscent of a honeycomb or a molecular structure.

The En-RRI project aims to rethink the relationship between science, technology and society through the production of empirical data, scalable support actions and guidelines to foster the integration of bottom-up co-creation initiatives in the framework of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) policies.
More specifically, the main objectives of En-RRI are:

  • to produce reliable and empirically grounded knowledge of the social dynamics, material conditions and cultural views on science and society that characterize some emblematic bottom-up co-creation initiatives in Italy;
  • collaborate with the organizers of these initiatives to create actions and tools consistent with RRI principles;
  • translate this work into guidelines and other tools that can be used to expand RRI beyond institutional forms of innovation.

En-RRI will carry out theoretically qualitative empirical research on some co-creation initiatives belonging to 3 main sectors: environment, health and medicine, ICT, and digital production to achieve these goals.
In the project's final phase, En-RRI will work on translating the empirical results into implementable tools, including a "bottom-up RRI toolkit", to promote RRI practices and policies related to citizens, grassroots initiatives, and DIY innovation.
