Genova Street Lab

The Municipality of Genoa has launched Genova Street Lab, a participatory and co-design process promoted by the Assessorato all'Urbanistica e dall'Assessorato alla Mobilità Integrata, Trasporti e Ambiente, in collaboration with the Municipio II Centro Ovest and with the technical-scientific support of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies and the Department of Design of the Politecnico di Milano.

The project aims to improve the quality of urban spaces through tactical urbanism interventions. This approach involves light and reversible solutions designed to make the city more livable, safe, accessible, and sustainable. The primary goal is to promote active mobility, encouraging pedestrian and cycling routes and facilitating the inclusive use of public spaces for all citizens.

The neighborhood of Sampierdarena has been chosen as a pilot area to experiment with these urban transformation interventions. Through active listening to the local community and the collection of ideas and proposals from citizens, the project is studying the accessibility conditions of local spaces and services, with the aim of responding to the community's real needs. Citizens will be actively involved in the decision-making and participatory design process through co-design workshops, opportunities for dialogue where technicians, institutions, and residents collaborate to rethink specific urban spaces together.

This pilot tactical urbanism experience, tested in Sampierdarena, will enable the development of guidelines and methodologies that can be replicated in other neighborhoods across the city.
