NEUROCLIMA. Developing and assessing novel educational and user-centred actions towards scaling up behavioural change and climate resilience through an AI-enhanced solution
Website's ProjectNEUROCLIMA is a Horizon Europe project aimed at promoting and supporting systemic transformations by involving and raising awareness among citizens about climate resilience strategies. The project envisages the creation of a connection system between politicians, public institutions and citizens through an innovative Human-AI mixed decision support combining artificial intelligence and human capabilities.
The aim is to make this system of connections explainable, reliable, responsive and proactive with regard to citizens' concerns, environmental changes and new proposals by politicians, creating a two-way dialogue between citizens and public institutions. In order to achieve this objective, the system will enable in-depth research based on monitoring mechanisms in line with the EU Adaptation Strategy and the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, with the aim of identifying needs, critical issues, expectations and trends that may influence societies in the EU but also the motivations behind policy proposals, taking into account local and national specificities.
NEUROCLIMA’s nervous system continuously monitors web and social media platforms for emerging trends and discussions on climate-related themes. A comprehensive data-collection and analysis infrastructure, including services and visualisation interfaces, facilitates bottom-up communication, issue identification, and informed policy making.
The project is built upon previous analyses, while its monitoring infrastructure informs the development of a theoretical framework titled the “Framework of Values, Skills, and Approaches for Behavioral and Systemic Change for Climate Adaptation”. This framework guides behaviour change efforts and governance towards climate resilience, proposing metrics, activities, toolkits, and multidisciplinary approaches while emphasising the potential of social tipping and leverage points across various contexts.
Through this approach, NEUROCLIMA intends to encourage a continuous dialogue among stakeholders, contributing to formulate concrete proposals to facilitate the green transition and promote greater trust in institutions.
NEUROCLIMA delivers three toolkits for stakeholders and citizens: (1) participatory design, (2) creative writing and (3) cinematography, animation, and performing arts. These toolkits foster inclusive and widespread participation, educate citizens of all ages, and facilitate participatory workshops regarding the adoption, implementation, and dissemination of EU climate initiatives. Furthermore, these toolkits aid in developing essential skills among educators, policymakers, decision-makers, and others in public governance to educate citizens about climate-related initiatives, gather feedback, and promote innovative participatory policy co-design.
NEUROCLIMA also explores digital storytelling, authoring tools, educational board games, and rich media content. It involves policymakers, citizens, and students to co-create motivating learning experiences for climate adaptation.
The project develops and executes an operational dissemination and communication strategy to maximise its impact at the European level, fostering collaboration with aligned EU-funded initiatives.
