Designed to generate emotions: Taking museum visitors beyond information
December 13, 2024, 6:30 pm, Workshop Space 3, Building B3, Campus Bovisa Durando, Via Durando 10, Milan
Abstract
Since the late 90s, mobile devices have been a favoured platform for the delivery of digital content in cultural heritage settings and apps are now commonplace. The emerging Internet of Things could change this landscape: by enabling the seamless integration of the material exhibition with the digital content, and by collecting and exploiting use data it is possible to create novel visitors’ experiences and services. The focus shifts from the delivery of information in place to creating memorable experiences. Design practice for cultural heritage must then open up to include aspects of storytelling and embodied experiences.

Daniela Petrelli is Professor of Interaction Design at the Politecnico di Milano in the Department of Design. Her research explores the many ways in which the digital and the material worlds collide, fuse, converge or clash and how people perceive and interact with new digital-material hybrids that sense the environment, display autonomous behaviours, react to people, objects and the environment.
Professor Petrelli is internationally known for her influential work on new technologies for archives, museums and cultural heritage. She has published over 100 international peer-reviewed contributions and received twelve awards both from academia and industry
