What does it mean today to be a man for those aged between 16 and 24? An Ipsos survey of 800 young people, promoted by the Inter-University Research Centre “Culture di genere” together with Corriere della Sera and Il Tempo delle Donne, directly asks young women and men about the models of masculinity they identify with, reject or miss.
The result is a portrait in transition: most young people no longer believe that masculinity is something natural or fixed. Yet nostalgia for past models remains strong, and a profound gap emerges between men’s self-perception and women’s perspective, spanning work, power, relationships and technology. Edited by the Scientific Committee of the “Culture di genere” Centre, the volume brings together legal, sociological, psychological and communication perspectives on a transformation that is still underway, between enduring old codes and new languages seeking shape, in order to understand who today’s young men really are.
Founded in 2013, the Inter-University Research Centre “Culture di genere” brings together eight Milanese universities, the University of Milan, Bicocca University, Politecnico di Milano, Bocconi University, IULM University, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Università Cattolica and Humanitas University, with the aim of promoting studies, research and positive action on gender cultures. It is currently directed by Marilisa D’Amico, Full Professor of Constitutional Law and President of the University of Milan’s Single Guarantee Committee.
