Design History Research Group
The DHG. Design History Research Group has long been engaged in historical and critical studies aimed at preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of design in its multifaceted identity.
Exploring the historical roots of design seeks to understand how these origins have influenced and continue to shape contemporary and future design, particularly in light of its complex extensions. A key focus of the group is analyzing how design has been shaped by, and in turn shaped, social, cultural, and economic dynamics over the centuries.
The group’s multidisciplinary nature is essential, integrating and synergizing studies in art history, the history of technology and materials, the history of interior architecture and exhibition spaces, and broader sociocultural studies related to the evolution of design from the 19th century to the present.
Historical research in the field of design is dedicated to safeguarding, studying, and enhancing the culture of design applied to all functional objects and services. This includes examining theories, techniques, and processes to describe and critique the present while offering insights for future design scenarios. In today’s context, there is a pressing need to recognize the value of Italian design culture, characterized by its polytechnic specificity that traverses design, techniques, production, communication, and artistic research.
Main Objectives of the Research Group
- Conducting Innovative Research: Using detailed studies and advanced methodologies, the group aims to generate new knowledge that enriches the understanding of design by fostering relationships and collaborations with academic institutions, research centers, archives, museums, and companies.
- Training New Generations of Researchers: By promoting a collaborative learning and research environment, the group is dedicated to nurturing young scholars, preparing the next generation of experts in the discipline.
- Disseminating Knowledge: Through publications, conferences, and seminars, the group seeks to share its findings with the academic community and the general public, while expanding its openness to international contexts and collaborations beyond academia.
Future Vision
The group aims to expand its research activities further and increase its international presence, striving to become a leading centre for the study and promotion of design history. In summary, DHG is an institution of excellence that, through its commitment to research, education, and dissemination, contributes to preserving and enhancing the legacy of design while offering new perspectives and inspiration for the future of the field.
